Fewer People Killed on Florida’s Roads in 2010
The numbers still aren’t good, but the number of traffic fatalities in Florida hit a three-decade low in 2010, according to a new report from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.
In 2010, 2,430 people died in traffic crashes in our state. That’s the lowest number since 1978, even though Florida’s population has doubled, department officials said. Law enforcement officers say more people are using seatbelts, and that is helping to save lives.
Unfortunately, one of the deadliest roads in Florida is right in our backyard. About 20 people each year die on U.S. Highway 19 in Pinellas County, an analysis by The Tampa Tribune found. Some parts of the highway carry 80,000 vehicles a day. Drivers often have to use middle turn lanes, and pedestrians have trouble making it across the busy road in the amount of time allotted by the traffic lights.
Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for people between the ages of 5 and 34, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
